My interest in process has allowed me to combine and explore both sculpture and fibers. Merging these two mediums allows me to have an intimate tactile process that occupies a physical space.
Most of the objects I make utilize simple forms, repetitive process, and materials. The simplicity of the objects allows the viewer to concentrate on the material and the construction of the piece. Formally I use the multiple as a strategy to relate to the physical space and a way to highlight how the object is contained within that space. Scale is another important element of my work. I am interested in the viewer’s physical relationship to the size, or function of the piece, and how this affects their interaction with the work.
My work tends to be interactive or figure dependent, because of this my work tends to be size appropriate to human scale. The presence of a person or persons with the work prompts a certain interaction; it is this interaction that I am interested in; rather than a choreographed performance. I have been exploring themes of social interaction and institutions; such as marriage; creating objects to visually highlight or manipulate common social interactions such as hugging. The objects elongate a usually brief moment, creating a new level to the interaction.
